Message from the Fredericton Swing Dance Executive Board:
We have been actively monitoring the COVID-19 outbreak for the past several weeks while deciding on how best to prepare for and/or handle this situation as it relates to swing dancing. After much consideration we have made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Swingin’ to Spring.
We want you to know that we did not make this decision lightly. We looked at options for proceeding with the event and implementing various forms of risk mitigation such as portable washing stations, hand sanitizer, advising people not to attend who were either sick or have traveled out of province, etc. We evaluated the risk factors and consulted both recommended health guidelines as well as healthcare professionals. The reality is that even with all of these things in place swing dancing is an activity that is extremely high risk. Guidelines for mass gatherings (https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection/health-professionals/mass-gatherings-risk-assesment.html) are not written with swing dancing in mind. We are actively touching and engaging with dozens of different people in a degree that is not comparable to other public events. We felt that we could not guarantee the safety of attendees or by extension the safety of the Fredericton community and that we would at best be rolling the dice with people’s health as the wager.
Many months of preparation and work have gone into this event and we are both deeply heartbroken and disappointed that we have had to cancel. We want you to know that we made this decision with the health and safety of everyone in mind and that keeping everyone safe as the executive team remains our highest responsibility.
